Catherine Hill Bay

Catherine Hill Bay sits on Awabakal Lands. The Catherine Hill Bay Community Alliance acknowledges the Awabakal peoples as the Traditional Custodians of the land and waters situated, including wetlands, rivers creeks and coastal environments. We acknowledge their cultural ties date back tens of thousands of years.

Catherine Hill Bay is a State Heritage listed coal mining village popular for swimming, surfing and fishing. The village takes its name from a ship, the Catherine Hill, which ran aground here in 1867. The beach features an iconic former coal-loading jetty, as evidence to the areas rich mining history. Its heritage listed miners cottages mark the oldest continuous settlement in the City of Lake Macquarie.

The village has been preserved as an excellent example of a coal mining company town and the residents have contributed to the preservation of this history. As the village expands we look forward to the growth and opportunities for generations to come.
